I believe the Constitution of the United States grants its citizens the right to bear arms to protect us from an overreaching government. I also believe this right is granted to the individual for a means of self-defense and support Tennessee's stance on gun rights and gun freedoms.
I am an avid supporter of Pro Life movements. I have supported the local chapter of Life Choices for several years now.
I believe our student athletes are students first and stand by the feeling they should focus on their educational achievements as well as their athletic ones. For this reason, I feel that College athletics like high school athletics are extracurricular and salaries for athletes are reserved for professional athletes. Revenue-generating sports help fund non-revenue generating sports, such as women’s and individual sports like golf and tennis.
I support the program that Bill Haslam has headed to get young adults into our state's technical colleges. Tennessee Reconnect is an initiative to help more adults return to higher education to gain new skills, advance in the workplace, and fulfill lifelong dreams of completing a degree or credential.
The initiative provides grants for students 25 and older to earn an associate degree or technical certificate free of tuition or fees. Bartlett has some of the largest medical device industries in the country. With a 2-year degree students could be making over $50,000 a year unencumbered by student loan debt.
I do not believe the current school voucher system is effective and a proper utilization of funds. We are at a critical point in the long history of education reform in Tennessee. I would prefer to help the entire Shelby County School system in general rather than focus on particular schools.
I believe our government representation is a service and not a career. For that reason, I support term limits for our government officials both state and federal. We keep fresh ideas and approaches flowing when we apply new minds to the issues. I believe our representation should be working to better our communities and the lives of the constituents not merely focused on oneself or the next winning the next election.
I strongly support our brave men and women who pledge their lives for others. To the EMT's, dispatchers, police, firefighters and rescuers I say thank you. My wife Rachael was a Memphis police dispatcher for almost nine years. I have firsthand knowledge of what these individuals sacrifice for our community.
